Seeking Beauty in a Movie

I ♥
Bill Cunningham New York.

Bill Cunningham is the seemingly ubiquitous New York Times fashion photographer, and subject of the documentary, Bill Cunningham New York. A captivating film by Richard Press, it is tender, funny, revealing, and inspiring -- with some truly memorable characters making guest cameos.

When I lived in New York, I'd often spot Mr. Cunningham outside of Bergdorf Goodman and Barney's. Like an adult version of 'Where's Waldo', he blended easily into the crowd-- always wearing the same uniform: blue jacket; khaki pants; camera. Click, click, click. He captured fashion trends to share in his New York Times column-cum-photo diary, "On the Street".

Once, at a party he photographed my friends and me sitting on a hay bale. I took a photo of him (seen above), and offered to bring him something to eat. He responded, "Oh no child. I eat with my eyes." What a great line! He says it again at a dinner party in the movie.

But, my favorite line was from an acceptance speech in Paris. Awarded the French Ministry of Culture's knighthood of Arts and Letters, Cunningham modestly states, "He who seeks beauty will find it." So simple, so enlightening, so Bill Cunningham.

Joan Mitchell in New Orleans

Three inspiring art exhibits featuring the work of Joan Mitchell are currently on view in New Orleans. The shows span Mitchell's career from the 1950's until her death in 1992 and feature the three major bodies of her work: paintings, works on paper, and prints. The venues are the New Orleans Museum of Art; Newcomb Art Gallery at Tulane University; and the Contemporary Arts Center.

If you like Abstract Expressionism, Mitchell's paintings, pastels, and prints will fascinate you. I personally love their intensity. But if you don't like Abstract Expressionism, explore her work anyway. Check out her color combinations, the rhythm of her lines, the smears, the smudges -- the vibrancy!

Paintings at the New Orleans Museum of Art
Untitled 1958, La Grande Vallee XVI, Pour Iva 1983

Works on Paper at the Newcomb Gallery, Tulane University
Untitled 1967, Untitled 1986

Prints at the Contemporary Arts Center
Sunflowers 1992, Champs (Black, Gray and Yellow) 1991-92

The gallery at Tulane University has a small but impressive selection of books for sale. My favorite was "Joan Mitchell Fremicourt Paintings 1960 - 1962". A concise essay by Klaus Kertess is accompanied by nineteen beautiful color plates. Go ahead and judge this book by its cover!

We Are Amused.

My first movie of 2010 was the English period film, The Young Victoria. Emily Blunt is excellent as the young Queen of England, portraying Victoria from defiant daughter to sudden monarch and jubilant new bride. Don't miss seeing this movie in the theater -- you'll want to experience the sumptuous costumes, gardens and interiors on the big screen.

When planning your New Year's resolutions, take a cue from the young Victoria and ...

Fall in love.
Keep a diary.
Fill a sketchbook.
Learn a second (or third) language.
Take an interest in politics and social issues.
But most importantly, shape your own destiny.
